NJ unlikely to force police to get COVID vacccine

When COVID-19 swept into North Jersey 10 months ago, it struck the Hawthorne Police Department particularly hard.
Almost a third of the squad s 34 officers fell ill almost at once, sending then-Chief Richard McAuliffe into a mad scramble to stagger schedules, change shifts and keep his officers away from each other.
That was the worst of it current Chief James Knepper said only a few officers have caught the virus since. But the spring disaster made an imprint. And now that the vaccine is available to law enforcement, he’s encouraging his officers to get it as soon as they can.
But he won t order them. ....

As ice fishing gets easier because of technology, can fish withstand the onslaught?

In North Dakota, accessing some of our winter fisheries has changed. With SnoBears and other tracked vehicles that can go just about anywhere, people are getting to some of these more remote lakes that used to maybe only get pressured seven out of 10 years. The other three years access would be close to zero because of deep snow, said North Dakota Game and Fish Department fisheries division chief Greg Power. Now anglers can get to them every year and they are good at what they do. They find fish and they catch fish.
The question is whether fish populations can withstand the technological onslaught. ....

Debate over proposed gas station continues

EFFIGHAM — If trucks regularly stop somewhere, does that make it a truckstop?
That question was raised by members of the public at an Effingham City Council meeting on Tuesday, which met to discuss the rezoning petition from QuikTrip, a chain of gas stations and convenience stores. It is proposing a location at Technology Drive and U.S. Route 45 next to the Interstate 57 exit north of Effingham.
Representatives of QuikTrip and several members of the public, all of whom had concerns about the proposed development, spoke to the council.
The City Council will vote on whether to rezone the property for the proposed location at its Jan. 5 meeting. QuikTrip is petitioning to change it from POM, planned office and limited industrial, to B-5, highway commercial district. This rezoning complies with the city’s comprehensive plan. ....

What a difference a week makes!
A week after four hours of testimony at the City Plan Commission that generally opposed a proposed QuikTrip Travel Center on North 3rd Street at Technology Drive, comments from several Effingham City Council members Tuesday night showed support for the project.
The proposal is for the travel center that would accommodate trucks and other types of vehicles on the northeast corner of the intersection. The sticking point for many about the project is the inclusion of the trucks. There are concerns that the trucks would tie up traffic and lead those who work in the area to go east to Willenborg and south to Evergreen. Some of the corporate locations to the east of the site are in opposition due to concerns about increased traffic and that the QT wo ....
