THOUSANDS of households in north Dorset have recently had their bin collection rounds changed as part of a project by the council which used live data to try and calculate the most efficient routes and schedules for the area. Around 34,000 households in and around the north of the county had their bin collections changed earlier this month Starting in late 2020, the project draws upon live data from a vehicle tracking system. An administrative team from the council then began crunching the numbers and looking at ways that bin collection rounds could potentially be changed and improved. Once the data had been analysed by back-office employees, supervisors and the area manager, the team took their findings to front line staff. Drawing upon local knowledge from waste collection crews and drivers, the rounds were finalised and affected households were identified. ....

St Mary s site in Shaftesbury PLANS for a new special school for Dorset children at the former St Mary’s private school near Shaftesbury have been backed by Dorset Council. Social services director Theresa Leavy says the opportunities for the site are ‘boundless’ and may be able to provide short respite breaks and a range of education and training. The council intends to create a new special school for around 280 pupils after paying £10m for the school site when it came on the market about a year ago. Education and young people’s portfolio holder Cllr Andrew Parry said the school site would be able to offer the place at a third of the cost and in a third of the time – he told Thursday’s Cabinet meeting that had the council decided to start a similar development from scratch costs could have risen to £50m. ....
LONG delays are expected at tips over the Easter bank holiday weekend. Dorset Council is warning potential visitors to tips, or Household Recycling Centres (HRCs), they should expect long delays - and councillors are advising to postpone your trip if possible. An increase in visitor numbers to Dorset over the Easter weekend partnered with social distancing measures at all of the council s 10 tips, which reduce how many people can be allowed on site at any time, have resulted in the expected delays. Councillor Jill Haynes, Dorset Council portfolio holder for customer and community services, said: We re already seeing more people than usual HRCs this year, and the Easter weekend is typically one of our busiest times. ....
