Four friends, one vision, 16 schools and counting: Taaleem co-founder shares his UAE success story


Dubai: The power of a shared vision between friends for an “ideal” model for both the local and expat student communities was the genesis of Taaleem, a UAE success story of a rapidly rising private school group, its co-founder said as the group marks over 15 years of service.
Dr Ziad Azzam, a former teacher and school principal, told
Gulf News in an exclusive interview how he and three of his friends, all passionate about education, wanted to see a “fresh” ethos in education suited to UAE’s demographics and values. At the time in 2003 Dr Azzam was working as a management consultant at an international firm where he formed a close friendship with three colleagues. Together, he said, they planned “a movement” to bring about much-needed change in Dubai’s school landscape. ....

UAE schools start holding huge variety of Ramadan activities


Dubai: Schools have started holding Ramadan-themed activities such as presentations on the month of fasting, acts of kindness and Quran recitals, among others.
Ramadan started on Tuesday in the UAE and as of always, schools in the country have lined up several events and activities to mark the occasion, while following the precautionary measures that have been put in place in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Virtual assemblies
At Jumeira Baccalaureate School (JBS), Dubai, students on Tuesday morning were shown a Ramadan presentation by various staff members, said principal Richard John Drew. “In our Islamic Studies lessons this month, work will be very special and each class will be creating presentations that we will share in virtual assemblies, including students reciting the Quran. Presentations will be done in Arabic and English to cater to all our students,” he added. ....

World Art Dubai 2021, considered the region’s most accessible and affordable art fair, has revealed the winners of its coveted award categories during the four-day event at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC, Apr. 7 – 10).
The show featured more than 2,000 artworks from over 250 artists and galleries from nearly 30 countries, with visitors over the weekend enjoying an array of features including digital, wearable and sustainable art, a collection created by Dubai Police, as well as a series of engaging workshops.
The event championed inclusivity, with prizes awarded to emerging artists, photographers and children. ....

Return to centuries-old ethos of teaching virtues in school, Dubai educator says


Dubai: Schools should return to the centuries-old practice of explicitly teaching “character education”, instead of focusing overly on test scores, a Dubai school said.
Jumeira Baccalaureate School (JBS), recently recognised as the first international school outside of the UK to become a ‘Kitemark School of Character’, has been heavily developing character education for the past three years.
While ‘Character and Civility’ is one of the four pillars of the UAE’s recent Moral Education curriculum and character education and moral education are often seen as one and the same character education goes back to the days of Plato and Aristotle, said Erika Elkady, Head of Secondary, JBS. Down the centuries, Elkady added, schools shunned this duty and instead relied on student results as a yardstick for their quality of “education”. ....
