Government accused of 'cat and mouse' game over public health funding | Local Government Chronicle (LGC)

Government accused of ‘cat and mouse’ game over public health funding
Health secretary Matt Hancock has moved to allay fears over the future of councils’ public health teams following a pitch from the body representing NHS trusts to take over some public health services.
But his department is also facing mounting pressure to reveal exactly how much funding public health teams will be getting next year, with just three weeks to go until the beginning of the new financial year.
There is growing concern in the sector of an attempted NHS land grab following an NHS Providers report published last month which argued that the NHS should take over the commissioning of key public health services. ....

Leeds set to get new leader as Blake becomes peer

Leeds City Council’s ruling Labour group has selected its current deputy leader James Lewis as its next leader, replacing Judith Blake (Lab) who is stepping down after six years in the top position.
Last month it was announced Cllr Blake would accept a life peerage after a nomination by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.
Cllr Lewis will become council leader, subject to a vote at a full council meeting, when Cllr Blake steps down to take up her peerage, although it is not yet clear when this will happen.
Cllr Blake, who is also chair of the Local Government Association’s children and young people’s board, became Leeds’ first female leader in 2015. ....

Jenrick 'made arguments within government' to delay local elections | Local Government Chronicle (LGC)

Jenrick ‘made arguments within government’ to delay local elections
The communities secretary has told the country’s most senior councillors that he sees a “very strong argument” for delaying the local elections, putting him on collision course with the prime minister who has made it clear he wants to see the polls go ahead.
Robert Jenrick told councillors during this afternoon’s councillors forum that he understands “it isn’t just about campaigning” but the “delivery of the elections” but that “for those people not involved in local government it’s easy to miss that, and that delivery begins now”. ....

Boroughs urge school holiday extension as Greenwich defies ministers

London boroughs have joined the capital’s mayor in calling on the government to allow an extension of the Christmas holidays for colleges and secondary schools in a bid to stem the rise of Covid cases.
A letter sent to the prime minister yesterday, signed by Sadiq Khan (Lab) and London Councils chair Georgia Gould (Lab), said the government must give “urgent consideration” to closing education establishments for children aged over 11 “a few days early” for the holidays and “keeping them closed longer after Christmas”.
They said this would allow for further testing of young people in the wake of last week’s announcement that mass testing would be rolled out to schools in London, Kent and Essex. ....
