ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – Following the death of a Cornell professor in May of 2020, Jeffrey Skinner has now pleaded guilty to multiple crimes, including Vehicular Manslaughter in the First Degree.
On May 3
rd, 2020, Professor Jerrie Gavalchin was walking her bicycle along the fog line of Lick Street in the Town of Groton when Skinner struck her with his vehicle. Skinner also admitted to leaving the scene without calling 911.
Gavalchin died as a result of the injuries she suffered in the crash.
Skinner has been found guilty on charges of vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, and leaving the scene of an accident without reporting. ....

Groton man pleads guilty to vehicular manslaughter in drunk driving accident that killed Cornell professor


Jeffrey Skinner, 44, of Groton, pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter in the first degree, two counts of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a personal injury incident without reporting. He also waived his right to appeal.
Skinner admitted to operating a vehicle while intoxicated on May 3, 2020 in Groton, causing the death of Jerrie Gavalchin, 64, also of Groton. Gavalchin, a professor at Cornell University, had been walking her bicycle along the fog line of Lick Street when the defendant struck her with his vehicle, causing fatal injuries. Skinner also admitted to leaving the scene without calling 911. 
The maximum possible sentence is a term of five to 15 years in New York State prison.  ....

Groton man pleads guilty to DWI crash that killed professor


A 44-year-old Groton man pleaded guilty in Tompkins County Court Thursday to felony first-degree vehicular manslaughter, two counts of felony driving while intoxicated and felony leaving the scene of a personal injury incident without reporting  all charges which stemmed from the May 2020 crash that resulted in the death of 64-year-old Cornell Professor Jerrie Gavalchin, of Groton. 
Gavalchin was walking her bicycle along the fog line of Lick Street in Groton when Jeffrey Skinner struck her with his vehicle, causing her to suffer fatal injuries. Skinner admitted to leaving the scene of the accident without calling 911.
The maximum possible sentence for Skinner is five to 15 years in prison. ....

Circus, classical greats, exhibits and more among week's arts events


The circus will ‘Prevail’
The show goes on for the Circus Arts Conservatory, which has put together a new circus production that will be presented in front of live audiences and be available for home streaming. “Prevail” features a number of veterans of Cirque du Soleil shows who have been unable to perform for the last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Some have been working as coaches with the Sarasota Sailor Circus. “Prevail” will be presented Friday through Sunday and March 12-14 in the Sailor Circus Arena, 2075 Bahia Vista St., Sarasota. The lineup of talent includes aerial artist Alanna Baker, aerial strap artist Darren Trull, Native American hoop dancers Eric Hernandez and Shandien LaRance, slack wire artist Evgeny Vasilenko, silk artist Giulia Piolanti, Chinese pole artist Oli Poitras and unicyclists and acrobats Marie-Lee and Philippe, who competed in 2016 on “America’s Got Talent.” All are donating their time and performance to support CAC. ....
