An ogre sings outdoors in ‘Shrek’
“Shrek, the Musical,” the stage version of the hit animated film, is usually produced with a cast of roughly 30 playing everyone from the green ogre named Shrek to dozens of fairy tale characters. All of them will be on hand, but in a different way in a new outdoor production presented by the Dingbat Theatre Project. All the actors play multiple characters and manipulate a variety of puppets. It is staged by founder Luke Manual McFatrich (he also plays Dragon) and is choreographed by Brian Finnerty (who also plays Lord Farquaad). Cory Woomert plays Shrek, Alyssa Goudy is Princess Fiona and Derric Gobourne Jr. is Donkey. The cast also includes Noelia Altamirano, Amanda Heisey and Jamie Molina. Performances are outdoors at the Bazaar on Apricot and Lime, 821 Apricot Ave., Sarasota, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and May 13-15. Tickets are $25 or $50 for blanket seating for up to four people. For more information: dingbattheatre.org

Circus, classical greats, exhibits and more among week's arts events

The circus will ‘Prevail’
The show goes on for the Circus Arts Conservatory, which has put together a new circus production that will be presented in front of live audiences and be available for home streaming. “Prevail” features a number of veterans of Cirque du Soleil shows who have been unable to perform for the last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Some have been working as coaches with the Sarasota Sailor Circus. “Prevail” will be presented Friday through Sunday and March 12-14 in the Sailor Circus Arena, 2075 Bahia Vista St., Sarasota. The lineup of talent includes aerial artist Alanna Baker, aerial strap artist Darren Trull, Native American hoop dancers Eric Hernandez and Shandien LaRance, slack wire artist Evgeny Vasilenko, silk artist Giulia Piolanti, Chinese pole artist Oli Poitras and unicyclists and acrobats Marie-Lee and Philippe, who competed in 2016 on “America’s Got Talent.” All are donating their time and performance to support CAC. In person tickets are $20-$50. Digital tickets are $25. 941-355-9805; circusarts.org/prevail-a-benefit-for-the-circus-arts.
