A Split Rockwood: School Community In War Of Words Over How To Teach Diversity

St. Louis Public Radio
Amy Ryan, a Rockwood parent, reacts Friday during a parent-organized forum on the district's diversity curriculum.
What started as a tense debate over whether Rockwood’s schools should reopen in person last fall has descended into schoolyard bullying among the adults.
Politics didn’t used to enter the schools. The elementary recitals and high school football games were where parents could put conservative versus liberal views aside, don the school colors and root for their kids.
But without that common social fabric in a year of social distancing, the Rockwood School District community is ripping at the seams, frayed first by the pandemic’s closure of schools and then shredded by a fight over whether and how to teach diversity in classrooms. The district’s superintendent and diversity director are both walking away, but educators in the district continue to feel under siege from a group of parents leading a charge against a diversity curriculum they say is “indoctrinating” their children.

Lansing man, 60, killed in east side shooting loved Special Olympics

LANSING — Before he was shot and killed, Larry Fields' family said he was walking home from a relative's birthday party on Lansing's east side, a plate of leftover cake in his hands.
The cheerful 60-year-old lived just a few blocks away and his sisters had begged him to let them drive him home. But he refused, Victoria Wiltrout, one of Fields' seven sisters, said.
It was a walk he'd done hundreds of times before, so they let him go, Wiltrout said. He made it up the street and turned a corner. Then they heard five shots.
Surveillance video later showed Fields had just turned onto Climax Street when he was attacked, Wiltrout said. She said she doesn't know what the shooter's motive was.

To become a thought leader, founder Jennifer Spencer suggests focusing on a niche you're already familiar with.
She says your thought leadership should reflect who you are, so stick to what you're passionate about.
Having an influential voice will increase your credibility and boost exposure for your brand and advocacy.
As the online ecosystem for thought leadership has continued to populate, many have turned their attention away from social media numbers, worrying it's too competitive. And while it's true that the battle for an online footprint has never been more fierce, it's also never been more important to claim your unique stake on the Internet and create content that proves that you're an expert in your field.

The young professional died at Beachy Head, East Sussex, in November 2019 - months after drinking the brew.
Jennifer's aunt Fiona Chase said her niece fell into a “sort of psychosis” after practising Kundalini yoga, but that she had no known mental health problems before taking ayahuasca in Peru.
