The base’s reserve unit, the 349th Air Mobility Wing, took the lead this week on Nexus Dawn, a three-day exercise Monday through Wednesday that brought together multiple services as well as airmen from five other Air Force bases. The exercise took place across the western seaboard. The aims were to test and improve the training, equipment and combat readiness of the units, which also included members of the Air National Guard and U.S. Marine Corps.
LANSING — Before he was shot and killed, Larry Fields' family said he was walking home from a relative's birthday party on Lansing's east side, a plate of leftover cake in his hands. The cheerful 60-year-old lived just a few blocks away and his sisters had begged him to let them drive him home. But he refused, Victoria Wiltrout, one of Fields' seven sisters, said. It was a walk he'd done hundreds of times before, so they let him go, Wiltrout said. He made it up the street and turned a corner. Then they heard five shots. Surveillance video later showed Fields had just turned onto Climax Street when he was attacked, Wiltrout said. She said she doesn't know what the shooter's motive was.
