Rutgers OTEC launches 'seal of approval' for COVID-safety, worker-conscious restaurants

As New Jersey and the nation loosen restrictions, a new program through Rutgers Occupational Training and Education Consortium aims to highlight businesses that have kept the health and safety of their employees front and center during the pandemic.
Nearly two dozen businesses in New Brunswick have earned the Rutgers OTEC High Road Seal of Approval after completing a COVID-19 workplace health and safety program that included a two-hour virtual training, for which employees were compensated, which addressed health and safety protocols that empowered employees to keep their restaurants havens for health safety and therefore also open.
“A lot of workers were unnecessarily exposed to the virus early on,” Carmen Martino, a professor in the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations and director of Rutgers OTEC, told NJBIZ. ....

OAG: Payroll manager pleads guilty to withholding funds, demanding kickbacks

A payroll manager for a Bergen County construction company pleaded guilty to demanding cash kickbacks from employees and failing to pay them for work to circumvent prevailing wage rules on public works projects, Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced April 22.
UniMak LLC of Saddle Brook entered into a non-prosecution agreement with the OAG to pay $1 million to seven employees the company “cheated out of earned wages,” an announcement said.
Payroll manager Toni Jovanosk pleaded guilty before Superior Court Judge James Sattely to third-degree false contract payment claims for a government contract (prevailing wage violations) and third-degree misconduct by a corporate official. ....

The New Jersey Economic Recovery Act of 2020 (ERA), a seven-year, $14 billion package of incentive programs intended to encourage New Jersey job growth, property development and redevelopment, community partnerships, and numerous other economic development initiatives, was signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy on January 7, 2021.
