Opinion/Goldstein: Splendor (for some) in the grass

Opinion/Goldstein: Splendor (for some) in the grass
Gerry Goldstein
Gerry Goldstein (gerryg76@verizon.net) is a retired Providence Journal editor and columnist.
My childhood buddy Jim, who grew up with me decades ago in Northern New York where frigid winters brook no compromise, took revenge in adulthood by moving to the sunshine and heat of Arizona.
Now significantly past retirement age and tired of fertilizing, watering, and mowing his lawn, Jim recently tore it out and replaced it with artificial turf.
“Couldn’t be happier,” he says.
In this regard Jim and I are opposites, because much of my five-acre hobby farm in Greenville demands weekly grooming this time of year. ....

Dartmouth today announced it will endow, expand, and name its globally recognized foreign relations fellows program in honor of John Rosenwald, Jr. 52, Tuck 53, chair emeritus of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees and counsel to generations of Dartmouth leaders.
The postdoctoral fellows program, piloted in 2012 with grant funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, brings to Dartmouth leading young scholars who are working on pressing, complex international security questions.
Rosenwald s friends and classmates have led a quiet campaign to raise $12 million to endow the program in tribute to his 70 years of leadership and service to Dartmouth.  ....

War bassist and co-founder B.B. Dickerson dies at 71

Few bass lines can be said to define an entire West Coast vibe, but War co-founder B.B. Dickerson’s funky maneuvers on “Low Rider” along with a well-placed cowbell did just that.
Dickerson, who died Saturday at 71, made his name driving the bottom end of a seven-man Southern California musical institution known for hits including “Cisco Kid,” “Why Can’t We Be Friends,” “Slippin’ Into Darkness” and “Spill the Wine.”
Howard Scott, War co-founder and Dickerson’s uncle, said that Dickerson died in a Long Beach retirement home due to complications from a series of strokes.
Sampled by hundreds of artists including Janet Jackson, Kanye West, De La Soul, Mac Miller, Madlib, the Beastie Boys and DJ Quik, the rhythms that Dickerson built with drummer Harold Brown and percussionist Thomas “Papa Dee” Allen united the sounds of rock, soul and Latin music to create an essence that was distinctively Californian. ....

Morris 'B.B.' Dickerson, War Bassist and Co-Founder, Dies at 71

The musician’s death was confirmed to
Billboard by a family representative. He had reportedly been battling “a long, undisclosed illness” prior to his passing.
Born and raised in Southern California, Dickerson began playing bass at the age of 12. He’d soon latch on with a band called the Creators, which later evolved into another group named the Nightshift. The band was backing football player turned singer Deacon Jones when record producer Jerry Goldstein caught their performance. He’d soon connect them with ex-lead singer of the Animals, Eric Burdon, bringing Eric Burdon and War to life.
The band would tour extensively in 1970, including notably sharing the stage with Jimi Hendrix on what would be the guitarist’s final performance. Burdon would depart soon thereafter, but the wheels of War’s success were already in motion. ....
