Opinion/Goldstein: Splendor (for some) in the grass Gerry Goldstein Gerry Goldstein (gerryg76@verizon.net) is a retired Providence Journal editor and columnist. My childhood buddy Jim, who grew up with me decades ago in Northern New York where frigid winters brook no compromise, took revenge in adulthood by moving to the sunshine and heat of Arizona. Now significantly past retirement age and tired of fertilizing, watering, and mowing his lawn, Jim recently tore it out and replaced it with artificial turf. “Couldn’t be happier,” he says. In this regard Jim and I are opposites, because much of my five-acre hobby farm in Greenville demands weekly grooming this time of year.
