Mr. Rawlings led the Republic of Ghana for 19 years from 1981 to 2000 as its longest serving president and is credited with successfully transforming Ghana from military rule to a multiparty democracy with consecutive smooth power transfers.
An official state funeral for Mr. Rawlings was held Jan. 27 in Accra, Ghana, the nation’s seaside capital.
Leaders and voices globally remembered the statesman, who passed away in Ghana on November 12, 2020, after a short illness. He was 73-years old. ....

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday paid a glowing tribute to the late former President, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, whom he described as a “charismatic, energetic and fearless leader”.
The President said the young Air Force officer burst onto the political scene like a meteor that did not disintegrate but remained potent till the end of its life.
“On the contrary, it remained potent until the very end of its life, leaving strong footprints in the sands of time,” he said about the man he affectionately called ‘Comandante’, a Spanish and Italian expression for Commandant.
President Akufo-Addo’s tribute was delivered at the final funeral rites of former President Rawlings at the Black Star Square to climax three days of national mourning of the first President of the Fourth Republic and longest-serving Head of State. ....

President Akufo-Addo has described the late former President Jerry John Rawlings as his “good friend and a repository of sound advice.”
According to Mr Akufo-Addo, in moments of difficulty in his presidency, he could count on Mr Rawlings’ considerable “wealth of experience and knowledge,” and “on those occasions, he came through for me.”
Nana Akufo-Addo said these in a tribute to Mr Rawlings during his final funeral rites at the Black Square in Accra on Wednesday, 27 January 2021.

Rawlings’ family has accepted decision to rename UDS after him – Prez Akufo-Addo
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has disclosed that the family of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings has accepted his decision to rename the University of Development Studies, Tamale after him.
In a tribute read at the final day of a four-day funeral for Mr Rawlings in Accra, President Akufo-Addo said although the former military leader declined the initial offer to rename UDS after him in 2017, the offer has since found favour with his family.
