Connecticut must protect problem gamblers when legalizing online gambling

Two years ago, a friend of mine told me that they had blown nearly $600 betting on the Super Bowl. At the time I laughed it off, but after I found out that he burned through nearly $2,000 on other sporting events, my mild amusement quickly turned to concern. It became obvious to me that he was part of the 5% of all teenagers who are problem gamblers.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, gamblers have shifted from physical casinos to online gambling, with an increase of 30% to 40% nationwide. Connecticut is now the latest state to capitalize on this trend with two bills: An Act Concerning Gaming Agreements With The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe And The Mohegan Tribe Of Indians Of Connecticut and An Act Authorizing Sports Wagering, Online Casino Gaming, Online Lottery And Online Keno. These bills would legalize both sports betting and online gambling, which could potentially place problem gamblers at risk. Connecticut must establish a provision that would implement mandatory time limit ....

New Black, Latino history bill lacks needed representation for Native Americans

On Dec. 29, 1890, an estimated 150 Native Americans were killed in the Wounded Knee Massacre. After that, Native American history stops; no more “notable” events happened afterward. At least, that’s the story you get from U.S. History classes. Even then, I’ve only met one person whose class even got that far, with most classes stopping around the 1830s with the Trail of Tears, as if nearly 200 years of important history had been erased from our history curriculum.
On June 21, 2020, An Act Concerning The Inclusion Of Black And Latino Studies In The Public School Curriculum was passed into law. It was a written order to promote multiperspectivity and to give a voice to minority groups that have been systemically silenced by white-centric curriculums. The bill is a triumph for diversity and representation, but it doesn’t go far enough in ensuring that all silenced minority groups receive proper treatment in our education system. Particularly, this bill lacks coverage of ....

Lamont warns of spike in cases as holiday season approaches

Governor Lamont advised in a Dec. 17 press conference that Connecticut residents restrict how much they travel, aiming to avoid the same rise in cases that the Thanksgiving break brought.
“We all paid a price for [those Thanksgiving gatherings],” Lamont said. “Maybe that’s leveling out now, we’ll see, but let’s not let that happen again.”
Many are following Lamont’s warning to stay home for the holiday season.
“My family decided to not go anywhere for the winter break,”  Alexia Abrams-Rivera ’22 said. “We know that there will be a risk like there was with Thanksgiving.”

This warning comes just after one given on Dec. 16 by President-Elect Joe Biden that also urged Americans to refrain from traveling.  ....
