American Indians have highest rate of COVID-19 deaths in Wisconsin


American Indians in Wisconsin are now dying from COVID-19 at a higher rate per capita than any other ethnic group in the state, according to the Department of Health Services.
That s a change from the start of the pandemic and throughout the summer, when cases and deaths from COVID-19 among American Indians had been relatively low.
Tribal health officials had attributed the early success to stringent health mandates on the reservations, such as social distancing and wearing masks, and frequent safety communications to tribal members.
Then in the fall, cases and death rates started to climb drastically among American Indians, with the largest spike in deaths in November. ....

Local Casinos Open Again, But Tribal Economies Took Pandemic 'Nosedive'


But in March 2020, they were forced to close as COVID-19 swept the state.
That meant hundreds of millions of dollars for tribal health care, education, and social services evaporated as casino revenues slowed or stopped.
Casinos in our area are mostly open again, but things aren’t like they were before. And it could be years before revenues recover.
Table games at Mole Lake Casino remain closed for safety.

Many casinos were at least partially open again by June 2020, but Mole Lake Casino, run by the Sokaogon Chippewa tribe, held out.
“We could have opened back in June, too, if we had wanted to,” Godin said. “But the tribe decided it was in their best interests to keep their small community safe by keeping their casino closed, and we actually had the financial means to do so.” ....

Federal prosecutors announced Friday that Dominic Pezzola, 43, of Rochester, has been charged with entering the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6.
Pezzola, or Spaz, as he s referred to in the criminal complaint, is charged with obstruction of an official proceeding, destruction of government property and illegally accessing a restricted area. He was arrested Friday.
According to the complaint, Pezzola used a Capitol Police shield to break an exterior building and then went inside. He posted a video of himself smoking a cigar and saying, Victory smoke in the Capitol, boys. . I knew we could take this (expletive) over if we tried hard enough, according to court documents. ....
