Having a College of Engineering professor of the practice of mechanical engineering in the driver’s seat probably reinforced that impression. But the feared parochialism never happened. Collaborating with Blake Sims, Innovate@BUsocial ventures program director, Innovate@BU has guided Terriers from across the University to develop their ideas, such as RefEd, an app with course instruction for refugee students lacking educational materials. Each year, graduates everywhere use Commencement to send a message, decorating their caps with artwork, words of thanks and inspiration, and flashes of humor. This year was no different. At both the Sunday morning advanced degree ceremony and the afternoon undergrad ceremony, hundreds of graduating Terriers festooned their caps with words of affirmation (“I did it!), inspiration (“Change takes courage but do it anyway.” “Dream it. Do it.”), and faith (“God is within her. She will not fail.”) Others used their caps to send political messages (“Free Palestine”). ....
