North County Report: San Pasqual Academy Supporters Sue to Stay Open

There’s a new phase in the movement to keep San Pasqual Academy, a boarding school for foster youth in Escondido, open: A group of nine residents, alumni and staff is suing the state and the county for moving to shut down the facility.
The group is seeking to secure the facility’s future. It’s asking the court to order the California Department of Social Services to create a unique licensing and funding category to allow it to stay open past June 2022 and continue to serve foster youth across the county. Kimberley Johnson, the director of the California Department of Social Services; Nick Macchione, the director of the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency; and the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency are named as defendants in the suit. ....

CALIFORNIA Tax day comes up Monday in California, and it s an especially significant deadline for low-income Californians who qualify for a $600 Golden State Stimulus. If approved by the Legislature, that stimulus payment will be extended to the state s middle-class taxpayers.
Taxes are usually due in April, but the federal deadline was extended this year after lawmakers and some tax professionals put pressure on the Internal Revenue Service to give taxpayers more time to file as the pandemic continued to upend daily life. Fourteen people who had COVID-19 have died at Silverado memory care home in central Berkeley, making its outbreak the second deadliest at a long-term care facility in Alameda County, according to state data.
On Wednesday afternoon, the outdoor lobby of the care facility at Sacramento Street (at Bancroft Way) had a joyous buzz as residents and staff signed up for their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. But the outbreak and subsequent deaths has been devastating for the home, which cares for about 80 elderly residents who all have dementia, which includes Alzheimer’s disease. ....
