TPPF: ‘Lawyer Loophole’ Guts Bill to Protect Taxpayers

The Texas Public Policy Foundation released the following statement on SB 10:
“Senate Bill 10, as approved by the House Committee on State Affairs, creates a massive loophole that makes many of its good government measures irrelevant. As drafted, it allows lawyers working with local governments to avoid registering as a lobbyist, which will allow lobbyists to continue to receive taxpayer dollars but under the cover of darkness,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “It is disappointing that lawmakers did not advance a bill reflective of Texans’ overwhelming opposition to funding lobbyists with tax dollars. It is even more unfortunate that the bill put forward strengthens some lobbyists’ access to public money and influence. TPPF cannot support SB10 as it heads to the House floor and is hopeful that the lawyer loophole will be removed.” ....

A new property tax report is raising eyebrows especially among Texans struggling to put food on the table. The report, published every other year by the Texas comptroller’s office, confirms what most already suspect: Property taxes are big and growing fast.
In 2019, more than 4,200 local governments hit homeowners and businesses with property tax bills totaling $67.3 billion, a one-year increase of $3.5 billion, or 5.5 percent. More than half the burden came from school districts, which siphoned $36.2 billion out of the private sector. From 2014 to 2019, school taxes increased by almost $10 billion. ....

Bill honoring Matthew Meisner would let landlords save victim's pets

Matthew Meisner and Meagen Epstein were friends since birth. She remembers, at the age of seven, waiting at the hospital when her cousin was born on May 24, 1993, in Mesa.
Over the years their families spent Christmases and Thanksgivings together while living on the opposite ends of town.
“Matthew liked to cheer people up, he liked to make people happy. He was like the peacemaker a lot of the time,” Epstein told The Arizona Republic.
He loved animals and cared for his mom’s three cats after her death – Skitty, Hunter and QT.
Those cats are the inspiration for a new bill proposed in the wake of Meisner s murder. ....
