Curtain up at Cineworld as lockdown ends, but threats remain

Cineworld’s shares, which have already more than tripled from a low of 25p last October, jumped by another 4% early this week, says Naomi Ackerman in the Evening Standard: box-office receipts for the first weekend after cinemas were allowed to reopen in the UK “smashed expectations”. Not only has attendance “soared”, but revenues were increased further by punters “splashing out on popcorn and other treats”. All this raises hopes that the chain can recover from a disastrous 2020, when it suffered an “eye-watering” £1.7bn loss and was forced to seek a £900m bailout from investors.  ....

Place North West | Astley joins Vistry Partnerships


The regeneration specialist has named Nathan Astley as its new commercial director for the region.
Astley, a 35-year industry veteran, joins from Create Construction, where he worked as pre-construction director. He previously spent close to a decade with Styles & Wood, first as head of commercial services, then as commercial executive.
He said: “Although I have joined the company at a very unusual time, I am really looking forward to the challenge ahead.
“Vistry Partnerships has continuously led the way in delivering new homes and bespoke communities, but our work is far from complete. We are on a journey to secure profitable growth and, in order to achieve this, I’m looking to strengthen the commercial team.” ....

A few friends and I have made it something of a summer tradition to head to Sweden for a proper week away from it all. Picked up from a town near one of the Ryanair airports outside of Stockholm, we’re driven out to the coast where kayaks wait for us – along with all the kit you could ever possibly need for five days in the wilderness as well as our pre-ordered online shop (think cheese in tubes, various different kinds of processed sausage and unpronounceable beer).  ....
