Wilmington's opinion on Government Transparency Act of 2021

A bill filed recently could lead to more transparency in personnel laws.
Republican N.C. Senator Bill Rabon, who represents Bladen, Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties, helped sponsor Senate Bill 355, called the Government Transparency Act of 2021. The bill was filed on March 25 alongside Republican Senators Norman Sanderson, who represents Carteret, Craven and Pamlico, and Joyce Krawiec, who represents Davie and Forsyth.
Rabon said he initially tried to get a similar bill passed in 2011 but couldn’t get it off the ground. This time, he and Sanderson discussed it and it s something we both feel very passionate about.

Project Grace in downtown Wilmington approved to move forward

Amid public comments both in support of and against Project Grace, the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners approved moving forward with the project – with some amendments.
Zimmer Development Inc. presented a Memorandum of Understanding to the commissioners at their regular meeting Monday morning that detailed the foundation of Project Grace s plans and the timeline for making it happen.

The projected project will include 38,000 square feet of library space and 35,000 square feet of museum space, plus 8,000 square feet of shared museum and library space. It would also include 75,000 square feet for office space and multifamily units, with at least 5% for workforce housing.  ....

New Hanover County commissioners tweak, approve Project Grace deal, stick with lease-to-own

Story Park and the downtown library.
This week New Hanover County commissioners unanimously approved moving forward with Project Grace, after making a few minor tweaks. Those changes left in place the financing structure, which includes $24 million in additional costs to taxpayers in order to ensure the participation of private development.
Several of the last minute changes to the Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU, between Zimmer Development Company and the county addressed concerns voiced earlier this month by the advisory boards for the Cape Fear Museum and the New Hanover County Public Library.
These concerns included 8,000 square feet of shared space, which had been identified in a needs study but left out of the original MOU. The space has been restored to the project at no additional cost. ....
