GoLocalProv | Raimondo's Record as Governor: The Good, Bad and Ugly

BAD: Deloitte Sponsorship
Just days after blasting UHIP consultant Deloitte, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo spoke at a conference in California sponsored by Deloitte.
We paid them a lot of money, we didn’t get what we paid for, Raimondo said at the time of Deloitte s involvement in the UHIP debacle. And they represented to us that it was in much better shape than in fact it was: defective functionality, incomplete interfaces, engines that still aren’t working.
Days later, Raimondo was en route to headline the Deloitte-sanctioned event.
Deloitte is not paying for any of the travel, said Raimondo spokesperson David Ortiz. She had already committed to be at the event, and was able to have a private conversation with the CEO of Deloitte Consulting, who committed to being in regular communication with the Governor. ....

Purdue Creditors Zero In on Sackler Messages From a Decade Ago

Purdue Creditors Zero In on Sackler Messages From a Decade Ago
By Jef Feeley, Jeremy Hill and Valerie Bauman | December 29, 2020
Bankruptcy creditors are pointing to a trove of decade-old documents as they probe whether members of the billionaire Sackler family improperly took funds out of Purdue Pharma LP, the maker of OxyContin, to keep the assets away from victims of the U.S. opioid epidemic.
Creditors including U.S. states, cities and counties cite recently unsealed memos and emails involving the Sacklers, whose company has twice pleaded guilty to illegally marketing OxyContin painkillers. Creditors say the documents are among “powerful circumstantial evidence” that the Sacklers were worried as early as 2007 about being sued personally and discussed ways to protect their fortunes. ....

In July 2007, a few months after Purdue Pharma pleaded guilty to federal charges of misleading the public about the addictive risks of OxyContin, a confidential memo warned one of the company’s owners that its assets are best protected overseas.
The family-owned company faced “uncapped liabilities” and had to protect itself from the risk of a wave of lawsuits akin to the decadeslong asbestos litigation, said the memo, written by Peter Boer, then an adviser to Jonathan Sackler, the Purdue co-owner and a board member. ....

Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, was named in hundreds of lawsuits by states and cities over the drug s role in the opioid crisis.
In the summer of 2007, after Purdue Pharma agreed to pay $600 million to resolve a federal investigation of opioid-marketing misconduct, the Sackler family members at the helm of the drug giant deliberated whether it was time to leave the pharmaceutical business.
“I think we need to discuss if fundamentally we want to be in the pharmaceutical business going forward. I would vote no,” wrote David Sackler, who was not in the company at the time of the June email to his father, Richard, and cousin Mortimer, both on the company’s board. The email chain was about the possible buyout of a smaller company. “I think we’ve all had enough of a rough ride over the past 10 years to make ....
