Pitone enters into plea agreement in St. Joe County cat hoarding case


CENTREVILLE, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A plea agreement has been filed in the case of a St. Joseph County woman who was charged last August after more than 210 cats were found in deplorable conditions at two homes.
44-year-old Diane Pitone entered a guilty plea to a felony charge of abandoning or cruelty to between 10 and 25 animals at a home in Park Township.
The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of four years but prosecutors will ask that time behind bars be suspended. In addition, prosecutors will not pursue charges after more than 60 cats were removed from her boyfriend’s home in Three Rivers. ....

Sanford sentenced in girlfriends 2020 traffic death

Richard Sanford, 68, will serve a year in the St. Joseph County jail with two years probation for the January 2020 traffic-crash death of girlfriend Kathleen Wexler, 69. They had lived together in Three Rivers. 
St. Joseph County Circuit Court Judge Paul Stutesman said he could not be sure alcohol use was related to the fatal crash that snowy afternoon in the area of Banker Street and Klinger Lake Roads, south of Centreville in Florence Township. 
Stutesman blamed weather and road conditions for the wreck.
“Still, there must be some consequences for your action, he said.
Sanford had pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license, causing death.  ....

Group behind city's marijuana rules mum on funding after filing reports 4 months late

It took the outside group behind Port Huron’s voter-approved marijuana law four months to comply with state campaign finance law and so far, organizers aren’t getting any more specific about how the effort was funded.
Progress for Michigan 2020 spent roughly $63,000 on signature collecting, consulting and legal costs and promotional materials for its Nov. 3 marijuana proposal in the city, according to reports filed with the St. Clair County clerk’s office this week.
It’s reporting those costs as in-kind contributions to Jobs for Michigan Communities, the same name as another Michigan ballot committee. Committees can “bundle” contributions to campaigns in some instances under state statute. ....
