Community activist Tony Flora remembered as teacher, fighter, friend

Anthony “Tony” Flora, longtime organized labor advocate and community activist, died Friday of complications from a stem cell transplant related to his 14-month battle with non-Hodgkins T-cell lymphoma. He was 70.
Flora, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in the Long Island suburb of Massapequa, settled in South Bend because it was the hometown of his wife, Kristina Ann Lackman, who died in 2011. He is survived by their sons, Matthew and Mark Flora, of South Bend.
Flora, who graduated from Johns Hopkins University on a full academic scholarship, was a mail carrier in South Bend for 30 years, but found his true passion as a steward for Branch 330 of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
