Cases that come St. Joseph County District Court Judge Jeff Middleton will return to livestream format, following a misunderstanding involving state officials.
Meanwhile, Middleton, who has gained an internet following due to a pair of unusual court situations, broke a long silence last week, with a YouTube that focused on the topic of his shoulder-length hair.
Middleton said the attention his live feeds have drawn is a distraction that compromises the integrity of the court system. In March, he presided over a case that served as a springboard to his reluctant popularity. The case involved a Sturgis defendant in a domestic violence case. During the Zoom proceeding, attorney Deborah Davis told Middleton she suspected the victim and defendant were in the same room, despite a restraining order. Davis’ hunch proved correct. ST JOSEPH COUNTY, MI – The YouTube live stream of a St. Joseph County District Court judge may still come back online, after a misunderstanding between the judge and the Michigan State Court Administrator’s Office.
District Judge Jeffrey Middleton first drew national attention in March, when an attorney noticed a man accused of domestic violence was in the same room as his victim, despite a restraining order. An eagle-eyed Michigan prosecutor, a quick-thinking judge and fast-moving police caught a man violating a restraining order in a dramatic confrontation that unfolded during a virtual court hearing.
Coby Harris, 21, had been ordered to have no contact with his girlfriend after his alleged Feb. 9 assault on her in Sturgis, Michigan, which is about 45 miles south of Kalamazoo.
Because of Covid-19 restrictions, a March 2 hearing on the case, in front of St. Joseph County District Court Judge Jeffrey Middleton, was virtual, via Zoom and YouTube. The hearing included appearances by Harris and the victim, presumably from separate locations. ....

STURGIS, Mich. A preliminary examination in Michigan was adjourned abruptly recently after it was discovered the alleged assault suspect and victim were participating in the virtual hearing from the same home. The hearing was streamed online and posted to the judgeâs YouTube channel.
Coby Harris was appearing before the St. Joseph County District Court on March 2, facing accusations of assault with intent to commit bodily harm less than murder. Mary Lindsey, the victim, says the Feb. 9 assault started with an argument at a home in the town of Sturgis. ....
