The Las Vegas police department is using ancestry to find suspects of cold cases. DNA Samples Solved a Young Girl's Murder Case According to BBC News, the Las Vegas law enforcement solved the 1989 murder of 14-year-old Stephanie Isaacson by using a small volume of DNA. The Las Vegas police sent 0.12 nanograms of DNA samples to Othram's gene sequencing laboratory. The standard collection of DNA samples in a kit is 750 nanograms. Othram used the gene sequences to run through the ancestry database. The result pointed them towards the direction of the suspect's cousin, and there they've identified Darren Roy Marchand as the murderer.
Vegas police: New DNA testing led to suspect in 1989 killing July 21, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail LAS VEGAS (AP) — Tiny bits of DNA evidence and money from a donor helped investigators identify a suspect in the 1989 rape and killing of a 14-year-old Las Vegas girl, police said Wednesday. Darren Roy Marchand, the Las Vegas man now accused of attacking and strangling Stephanie Issacson more than 32 years ago, had been a suspect in another slaying and killed himself in 1995, police Lt. Ray Spencer told reporters. Marchand, then 20, had been arrested in 1986 following the strangulation of 24-year-old Nanette Vanderberg of Las Vegas. He was released when the case was dismissed over a lack of evidence, Spencer said.

Minnesota cold-case suspect alleges constitutional violations in DNA database search Private services intended for individuals to conduct genealogical research have increasingly been used by police and researchers to crack long-unsolved crimes, but the tactics present legal issues that have never before been litigated in Minnesota. 10:23 am, Jul. 1, 2021 × Michael Carbo Jr. VIRGINIA, Minn. — The Chisholm Police Department's hiring of a private company to comb DNA databases in search of the perpetrator in a decades-old killing was illegal, and all evidence obtained as a result should be tossed, a defense attorney argued. Public defender J.D. Schmid said law enforcement, in cooperation with Parabon NanoLabs, searched two databases without warrant or consent from people whose genetic information was disclosed, in violation of Minnesota law and the state and federal constitutions.

VIRGINIA â The defense for a man accused in the 1986 murder of Nancy Daugherty in Chisholm argued this week that all evidence acquired through DNA database searches should get thrown out of court. The investigation had led authorities to Michael Allan Carbo, Jr., 53, of Chisholm, who was arrested last summer and charged with Daughertyâs murder after law enforcement said they matched DNA from his trash to compare to samples from the decades old crime scene. But public defender J.D. Schmid maintained in a written motion that the evidence gathered by investigators and Parabon NanoLabs, a private company in the state of Virginia that helped search two DNA databases without warrant or consent from people whose genetic information was disclosed and violated state and federal constitutions.
