East San Jose education leaders at odds with push to reopen schools

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo’s efforts through his new advocacy organization to reopen San Jose schools is sparking frustration for some particularly communities of color.
Liccardo launched a petition through Solutions San Jose sending two emails within 24 hours to gather signatures demanding COVID-19 vaccines be prioritized for teachers and to reopen elementary schools. Liccardo said the continual closure of schools has created a “separate and unequal” education system unfairly hurting low-income families. ....

Reopening the Classroom: Where Some Bay Area School Districts Stand

San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews also says vaccines are key but admits not everything is in the district s control.
We re not at [phase] 1-B yet, which is teachers, educational staff being vaccinated, Matthews said. So, the time frame this is what Dr. Fauci has said repeatedly is that we don t set the timeline. The virus sets the timeline.
As for other districts, the Oakland Unified School District says it s waiting for more guidance from the state. San Jose Unified School District says it will start limited learning on campus in late February.
