SPOKANE, Wash. The Spokane Public Schools board is getting ready for a community forum where you can weigh in on North Central’s new mascot. The public meeting comes just a day after Governor Inslee passed a new law banning Native American symbols in public schools.
“Why does a 17-year-old junior in high school have to be doing this work?” said Ivy Pete, junior at North Central High School.
It’s a question Pete asks herself often.
“We’re just at the point where if nobody else is going to do it, those who have the voice need to step up and say something,” said Pete. ....

SPOKANE, Wash. The symbol of North Central High School must go. Students, staff, parents, community leaders and tribal members all agreed, Tuesday night, the school’s symbol is harmful to the students and the culture.
It is something many people called “Past due.” Getting rid of the name “Indians” from North Central High School.
“Native Americans aren’t ancient. They aren’t gone. They are here and they exist,” said 2019 North Central graduate Kayla Fontana. “Not as a feather, not as a degrading cartoon plastered before the parking lot.”
Many current and past students say the name is a harmful stereotype to Indigenous people. ....

York project has social impact worth over £180,000 as homeless find new lives as tour guides
A PROJECT which gives the homeless a chance to start a new life as tour guides has delivered a social impact worth over £180,000.
Invisible Cities - a social enterprise that trains people in York as well as Edinburgh, Manchester and Glasgow - recently worked with Big Issue Invest to develop a report about how its work had changed lives.
As well as wider training and advocacy work, Invisible Cities has supported 13 people directly to generate sustainable income with three going on to suitable further employment. ....

As school districts across the state scramble to transition their classrooms safely from the online world back to the real world, they may benefit from the advice of the dozens of Washington districts that welcomed students back into their halls this past fall.
Gov. Jay Inslee recently
encouraged school districts to work toward bringing elementary school students back to class this winter or spring as long as COVID-19 rates continue to decline. Currently, 116 districts across the state have already embarked into the uncharted territory of educating the state’s youth in person during the COVID-19 pandemic, according ....
