Jerry van Andel sat alone on the bow of the RV Lulu, a floating junkyard of a ship, as it bobbed against the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Across deck, a team of scientists bustled around a basket full of strange life forms, wrenched from a mighty crack in the Earth, 10,000 feet below the ocean s surface.
It was a momentous haul, but van Andel, an energetic Dutch oceanographer from Stanford University, wasn t dancing around the find with the rest of the team. He was deep in thought, propped up on the anchor windlass. A shipmate, John Porteus, noticed and shuffled over. ....

The Planets: Mars

OPPORTUNITY EXPLORES FOR 14 YEARS
DISCOVERS EVIDENCE OF ANCIENT FLOWING WATER
NARRATOR: Over 50 years of Mars exploration has revealed intriguing clues, suggesting Mars has a surprisingly watery past.
ASHWIN VASAVADA: There’s a lot of evidence for ancient flowing water on Mars. For one thing, there’s a lot of rivers that once coursed across the surface that are now dry, today. There’s also evidence for floods that catastrophically scoured the surface.
JOHN GROTZINGER: It’s undeniable that the early history of Mars was much wetter than it is today.
STEVE SQUYRES: The surface of Mars is littered with an uncountable number of little round things. These “blueberries,” as we nicknamed them, are what geologists call “concretions.” ....

As new probes reach Mars, here's what we know so far from trips to the red planet

Perseverance will be the fifth rover to arrive on Mars that’s capable of venturing across the surface of another planet.
These amazing laboratories on wheels have extended our knowledge of a faraway world. Here’s what they’ve told us so far.
The first rover - Sojourner
Twenty years after Viking 1 & 2 landed stationary probes on Mars, a third spacecraft finally reached the planet, but this one could move.
On July 4, 1997, NASA’s Pathfinder literally bounced onto the Martian surface, safely enclosed in a giant set of airbags. Once stable, the lander released the Sojourner rover.
