Tim's book, Road of Legends, Chapter 15: The Cailleach

A shortened version of our columnist Tim Porteus’s new book, Road of Legends, is exclusively serialised each week in the Courier. Here is the next mini-chapter.
THE road north from Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy tingles the senses. The way is guarded by mountains and as they entered the pass between them, Finn looked up towards the giant shoulder of Beinn Odhar. It’s looming presence made the walkers on the nearby West Highland Way look like tiny ants. Then Beinn Dorain took centre stage.
“Wow, what a view can we stop aunty, for a photo for my mum?”

Kathleen MacInnes plays Kay Matheson, who helped bring the Stone of Destiny back to Scotland in 1950, in the film An Ceasnachadh/Interrogation of a Highland Lass
DUNCAN Ban MacIntyre’s last visit to Ben Dorain on September 19, 1802 prompted the following day his composition, “Last Leave-taking of the Bens”, a moving farewell to the mountains, especially Ben Dorain, which his 18th-century poetry sang of so piercingly. It’s an old man’s elegy recollecting the energies of youth, the chase of the greyhound quickening as its owner’s breath becomes more laboured.

Herald on Sunday letters: Scotland needs to follow the psychological science if is to win the Covid battle
I WAS impressed by Helen McArdle s pointed article on the deficiencies of our self-isolation/quarantine system in contrast to those of many other countries and the crucial role these have played in the level of infection ( How Scotland’s ‘tougher’ quarantine hotels may restrict travel to England for months to come , January 31). There is more to be said.
I recently had the misfortune to find myself in South Africa amidst the growing concern about the coronavirus variant. On flying back to Glasgow, I was relieved that PCR testing for returnees had belatedly been put in place, together with improved passenger locator procedures. I was duly contacted inside 24 hours by a pleasant woman who went through the protocol for self-isolation with me. What struck me forcibly, however, was its failure to follow the science : specifically the psychological science.

Lesley Riddoch: How to reclaim our Bard's legacy for a Burns Night like no other

WHAT will you be doing this Burns Night? One thing’s for sure. You won’t be going to a community centre, village hall, church hall, friend’s front room or hotel function suite to attend an actual Burns Supper.
Does that mean celebrations won’t happen at all in 2021 or could the whole clanjamfry jump online, introducing Scotland’s national poet to new generations, New Scots and folk previously scunnered with Burns Supper ritual – pleasingly familiar for some but off-puttingly formulaic for others?
The pandemic will force Scots to decide.
Is the Bard’s legacy meaningful enough to get us all on Zoom, holding virtual Burns Suppers across borders, counties and countries with dispersed meals of haggis, neeps and tatties?
