Modern African art, from Dar es Salaam to Dunoon

In May 1967, a painting of men cutting down trees arrived in Dunoon, the small seaside town on the Cowal peninsula, in the west of Scotland. The painting was by the Tanzanian artist, Samuel J. Ntiro, and was posted from Dar es Salaam by Ntiro himself to T. G. Henderson, Argyll County Council s Director of Education.

Chopping Wood, had been bought by the renowned writer Naomi Mitchison for a council-funded initiative called the Argyll Collection. Mitchison had founded the latter in 1960 during her time as Argyll County Councillor, when she lobbied Henderson for funds to acquire modern art for Argyll s schools. Mitchison believed that children in rural Scotland, many of whom lived several hours from major museums, deserved to have access to modern art, to inspire creativity and pride. ....

How the Yes Forward Shop in Dunoon survived the long Covid lockdown


ALL during lockdown, Yes hubs across the country have had to shut down, but now that restrictions are gradually lifting they will undoubtedly play a huge part in the Yes movement’s future.
Here’s the tale of one terrific grassroots initiative that is getting going again having had to change its modus operandi during lockdown. David McEwan Hill wrote to tell us about the Forward Shop in Dunoon which is the headquarters of Yes Cowal, one of the movement’s most active groups.
He explained that the Forward Shop is probably a unique little enterprise which started out as a result of the political activity in Cowal after the 2014 independence referendum and then became something much more. ....
