Macon nonprofit helping students prepare with back-to-school bash

MACON, Ga. It s hard to believe, but Central Georgia students will begin returning to the classroom next month.
This weekend, the Power of Life nonprofit foundation will host a back-to-school bash at the Tubman Museum in Macon.
Children will receive backpacks, school supplies, and much more.
The goal is to get the children the supplies they need to start the school year off right.
We want them to take away that there are people who believe in community, there are people who believe in them, and there are people who do more than just talk about it, and we want to be in action mode for them, said board member Johnny Hollingshed. ....

MACON, Ga. Thursday night in a spoken word contest titled, Silence No More, several students spoke of social injustice through poetry.
The Griffith Family Foundation and Southwest High School hosted the contest at the Tubman Museum in Macon. 
Students from Southwest High School also had the opportunity to earn scholarships from the foundation. 
Two students told us they want other people to feel what they are faced with.
Now, we re just trying to be heard, pretty much. We want everybody to hear our side of the story. OK, yes, all lives matter, but now, we re talking about us, said Jayden Atkinson. ....

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The world watched and held its breath as a judge read the guilty verdict for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
Tubman Museum director, Harold Young, says he let out a sigh of relief as the judge stated the conviction.
“No one really knew what the verdict was going to be,” Young said. “And I just felt relieved.”
Although George Floyd was from Minneapolis his cries for help before his death echoed all the way to Middle Georgia. This led to several demonstrations and calls for equality last summer. ....

WINDSOR TERRACE Anthropologist Tom Riley did not understand why his grandmother, in the mid 1950s, resisted an interview with a priest working on a biography of the family’s famous ancestor, Bishop James Augustine Healy.
Bishop Healy the eldest brother of Riley’s great-grandmother, Martha was born into slavery in Jones County, Georgia. He moved north for education as a young boy and later became a priest. In 1875 he was consecrated as the second bishop for the Diocese of Portland, Maine. ....
