Transport and logistics favourite Mainfreight made an historic move, breaking through the $70 mark for the first time as the steady-as-you-go New Zealand sharemarket made a small gain.
The S&P/NZX 50 Index increased 25.61 points
or 0.2 per cent to 12,646.14, again trading in a narrow range of between 12,598.03 and 12,664.42. There were 87 gainers and 47 decliners across the whole market, with 45 million shares worth $189.35 million changing hands.
Mainfreight, by far the market s most expensive stock, rose 70c to $70.30 after hitting an intraday high of $70.57. The company reached $69.89 on December 30 and has roared back from $25.10 on the market s low of March 23 last year, when Covid-19 took hold. The New Zealand sharemarket was a little edgy and fell nearly 1 per cent as it awaited Friday s unique exchange traded funds activity in the leading energy stocks, Contact and Meridian.
The S&P/NZX 50 Index
closed at 12,636.55, down 114.83 points or 0.9 per cent on solid volume of 64.6 million share transactions worth $219.62 million. The index fell from an early morning burst that reached 12,770.83 points. ....

The New Zealand sharemarket gave back much of its gains from the day before, falling more than half a per cent on steady trading as it entered the four-day Easter break.
The S&P/NZX 50 Index
fell 72.38 points or 0.58 per cent to 12,488.31, after rising 0.92 per cent on Wednesday. The index picked up in late trading, beforehand reaching an intraday low of 12,439.41.
There were 63 gainers and 74 decliners over the whole market, with 43.46 million shares worth $165.38 million changing hands. ....

The S&P NZ50 finished the day up 0.3 per cent.
The best performing sector on the day was consumer staples, which increased by 2.0 per cent. The next best performing sector was real estate, which rose 1.2 per cent. The worst performing sector on the day was utilities, down 1.4 per cent, followed by information technology, falling 0.7 per cent.
The best performing company on the day was corporate travel company Serko, which jumped 3.4 percent, with outdoor wear retailer Kathmandu Holdings (+3.1 per cent), not far behind. The move is unsurprising, considering the recent rotation into retail exposed stocks. Investors may be anticipating that, similarly to other retailers who have reported positive updates, Kathmandu has also benefitted from a release of consume ....
