New poll: North Carolinians overwhelmingly oppose eliminating corporate income tax


Last month the North Carolina Senate passed a bill that would eliminate the corporate state income tax over five years, beginning in 2024.
New polling, released Thursday by progressive policy group State Innovation Exchange, (SiX) shows North Carolina voters overwhelmingly oppose such a change.
The poll, of 800 registered voters in the state via telephone and online between July 6 and July 11, found 66 percent against completely eliminating the state income tax.
That view held across the political spectrum with 59 percent of Republicans opposing the change, 74 percent of Democrats and 58 percent of Independents. Of those who voted for Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, 58 percent opposed the change. Among supporters of President Joe Biden, 76 percent were opposed. ....

Last night, the Durham school board voted to send students back to school in person in March and April but some county leaders aren t happy about it.  
In an emergency meeting, the board voted 5-2 to implement school administrators plan to bring students back for in-person learning beginning next month, a move, Durham Public Schools said in a press release, that comes in light of Senate Bill 37, the bill that would mandate all schools in the state reopen for in-person learning.
We have heard from families who want to remain in remote learning and others who want to return to classrooms, said Dr. Pascal Mubenga, DPS superintendent.  We are now able to provide both of those options. ....

Grassroots Group Urges North Carolinians to Pledge Stimulus Checks to Undocumented Families

A local immigrant’s rights group is restarting a grassroots initiative encouraging residents to donate part or all of their $600 stimulus checks to undocumented families. 
Congress has mandated the IRS send over 100 million taxpayers the payments by January 15 to give struggling families a modest financial boost. But undocumented residents are ineligible to receive any federal relief, though many are frontline and essential workers or are part of a community particularly hard hit by COVID outbreaks. 
The charge to help needy families—dubbed #PledgeYourCheck—is once again being led by grassroots group Siembra N.C., which has offices in Durham and Greensboro.  ....
