Litter campaign Tory MP who dropped cigarette butt accused of hypocrisy

A Tory MP who urged people not be be “litter tossers” has been accused of hypocrisy after he was fined for dropping a cigarette butt.
Richard Holden, MP for Durham North West, was one of two people caught by neighbourhood wardens outside the election count at the Louisa Centre in Stanley, County Durham, on Saturday, and was given a £100 fixed penalty notice.
Last summer, Mr Holden launched a lockdown litter-picking campaign in his constituency, saying it was “unacceptable” that beautiful areas were strewn with rubbish, and he said he backed enforcement action.
Great to have such great local support out in #Blackhill today – managed to get quite a lot of litter picked up this morning! ....

Hartlepool by-election: A shock but not a surprise - but is it the start of a seismic shift?
IT is a shock but not a surprise.
It is a shock because ruling parties do not make by-election gains: this is only the sixth in the last 100 years. It is a shock because Hartlepool has not elected a Conservative MP since 1959.
But it is not a surprise because in 2019, a Tory tsunami swept through the Tees Valley and County Durham. It lapped around Hartlepool, but the Brexit Party in this very Brexity town split the vote, allowing Labour to claim a 3,500 majority. This result, then, is just a continuation of 2019 – it shows that after Redcar, Sedgefield, Bishop Auckland and Durham North West, the blue tide is still coming in. ....

MOST of the focus of “Super-Thursday”, the biggest set of local elections the country has ever seen, has gone on the Hartlepool by-election – dubbed the most important by-election in 30 years – and then on the Tees Valley mayoralty.
But it is no exaggeration to say that Durham – not just a heartland but a bastion – of Labour is in the melting pot.
If the huge, and shock, Parliamentary gains that the Conservatives made in 2019, even winning Durham North West, are translated into council seats then the first change of power in a century could occur at County Hall. ....
