Row Dallas allows kids in underserved communities to learn skills that extend beyond the water.

DALLAS For most eighth-graders, life doesn’t get much harder than a math test.
But for 14-year-old Jeremy Belgrade, his problems were bigger than just algebra.
“My grades were really bad,” Belgrade said. “Most of my grades for every semester were mostly failing. I only had like one passing grade.”
Belgrade says that all changed when he got an invitation to the lake.
It came from a program called Row Dallas, which offers kids in underserved communities a chance to try rowing. ....

When she was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in 1996, Debbie Bunch Kehoe fell into a pity party. She joined a support group, but that just depressed her more. Linda McCartney’s death from the same disease was in the news; Kehoe was terrified.
Then she discovered Pink Phoenix, a dragon boating team based in Portland, Ore., and the first in the U.S. made up entirely of breast cancer survivors. ....

Coaches help navigate rough times

Throughout the last nine months, Dallas United Crew (DUC) Program Director Steve Perry and his coaches have been successfully navigating the uncharted waters of the global pandemic, from pivoting to virtual training in the spring to cautiously and methodically re-opening the Dallas United Crew boathouse in the summer providing youth athletes the opportunity to get back on the water safely.

Today, more than ever, DUC coaches are doing more than just coaching. When asked to describe the DUC program, rowers say that DUC is “home,” “family” and “an opportunity to be a part of something bigger.” Coaches provide stability in an unstable world and a sense of hope and belonging for student athletes, while rowing provides a much-needed opportunity to be outdoors, stay active and to socialize safely. ....
