10 vie to become Middle Keys judge


There is plenty of interest to preside over the judicial bench in Marathon, as 10 local attorneys have applied to replace retiring County Judge Ruth Becker.
Becker, who has served in the seat since 1990 and handles cases at the Marathon courthouse, will retire July 30.
Ten attorneys from throughout the Florida Keys with a wide-ranging backgrounds from criminal to civil law have applied.

Man who killed wife, 4 kids sentenced

ROSWELL – A Roswell man was given five consecutive life sentences in the killings of his wife and four daughters in 2016.
Juan David Villegas, 39, was sentenced to 150 years in prison after changing his plea from not guilty to no contest on five counts of first-degree murder on May 14, the fourth day of the trial in the case. State District Judge Dustin Hunter handed down the sentence Wednesday.

Villegas was charged with killing 34-year-old Cynthia Villegas and the couple’s four daughters, 14-year-old Yamilen Villegas, 10-year-old Cynthia J. Villegas, 7-year-old Abigayl Villegas and 3-year-old Idaleigh Villegas.
All were killed by gunshots to their heads. ....

Walz proposes funding for Veteran Cemetery in Redwood Falls

On Monday, Feb. 22, Governor Tim Walz announced his 2021 Local Jobs and Projects Plan – his capital investment recommendation for the current legislative session. The plan invests $518.086 million in infrastructure projects across the state to maintain existing buildings, invest in communities, and ensure that the state can leverage available federal funds.
Includes funding for Redwood Falls Veterans Cemetery
The Governor recommends $4.5 million to construct, furnish, and equip the new State Veterans Cemetery in Redwood Falls. This provides funding for the State of Minnesota s fourth State Veterans Cemetery as intended by the 2011 legislature. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration s Veterans Cemetery Grant Program (VCGP) will provide a $5.99 million federal grant for this project. ....

A man who engaged in a lengthy armed standoff with Roswell police in June has pleaded not guilty to multiple criminal charges.

On Monday when he appeared via Google Meet at his arraignment in New Mexico’s 5th Judicial District Court in Chaves County, court documents state Jerry Steven Padilla, 46, of Roswell, waived a formal reading of charges and pleaded not guilty to five counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, along with one count each of battery of a household member and evading, resisting or obstructing an officer. He also pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in an unrelated case. ....
