Expensive refrigeration was cutting into Vipul Saran’s profits. As an undergrad in India, and the third generation in his family to work in agriculture, Saran had started a new venture: exporting potatoes from western Uttar Pradesh to the Middle East.
But the high cost of cold storage had become “a pinching point.”
To ship $2,000 worth of potatoes to Dubai in a refrigerated container in the summer, he’d pay $3,000 – losing $1,000 in profits before the product even got to the buyer. But to ship the potatoes in the winter – when he could get away without refrigeration – cost just $96.

CDC recommends pausing Johnson & Johnson vaccine, college vaccination day canceled

The Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) is sharing information regarding the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently recommending that out of an abundance of caution, the use of J&J vaccine be paused following six reports of an extremely rare type of blood clot in the US. To-date, TCHD has administered a total of 130 doses of J&J vaccine to members of the Tompkins County community.
TCHD planned to administer J&J vaccine through a local ‘College Student Vaccination Day’ this Thursday, April 15. Due to the national pause of J&J distribution, TCHD is canceling the "College Student Vaccination Day" including Cornell University, Ithaca College, and Tompkins Cortland Community College. This cancellation follows CDC and New York State Department of Health guidance to pause administration of the J&J vaccine. Students will receive additional communications directly from their respective institution.

E-commerce startup Rosie secures $10M in financing

March 1, 2021
Rosie, a Cornellian-founded startup that offers e-commerce solutions for independent grocers and wholesalers, raised $10 million in Series A financing led by Avenue Growth Partners, a Washington, D.C.-based investment firm, earlier this month.
Fueled by rising demand for online grocery shopping and delivery amid the coronavirus pandemic, Rosie has tripled the size of its team and increased the number of retail and wholesale partnerships by 900% in 2020.
The startup, based in Ithaca, provides local and independent grocers with mobile and web platforms so they can expand their business online. This also benefits shoppers who prefer to frequent independent grocery stores in their own communities, and can now do so without leaving their homes.
