We look at where they’ve been, what they’re doing now, and what we might expect them to do as lawmakers. The 2021-22 session began in late January. Expect COVID-19 and the ongoing fallout from the pandemic to be top priorities for lawmakers, who are crafting a new budget for the biennium. Newly-elected Winston-Salem City Council Member Kevin Mundy has issued a video apology for comments he made asking members of groups that have advocated for reduced police spending to tone down their remarks to the city council. Mundy, a Democrat, participated in a Zoom meeting on Thursday with three members of the group Forsyth County Police Accountability and Reallocation Coalition. In the meeting, Mundy and members of the group discussed demands that the city move money away from policing and spend it on efforts to address mental health and other concerns. Mundy Mundy told the three women on the Zoom call that he felt the critics of police spending were taking too harsh a tone in making their demands to the council. ....
Just because the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, that doesn’t mean that’s what people feel their time is worth, a Compare.com study discovered. For the 12th consecutive year, North Carolina s 38,000 minimum-wage workers did not receive a pay raise with the arrival of the new year Friday. They remain stuck at the federally mandated $7.25 an hour set in 2009. The majority of N.C. Republican legislators expressed little, if any, interest during the 2019-20 session in a wage hike for private-sector workers. Constricting minimum-wage increases is that North Carolina s constitution does not allow for voter-initiated referendums, which gives Republican legislative leaders the power to shelve minimum-wage bills. ....
