KVUE Senior Reporter Tony Plohetski has been named the 2021 broadcast recipient of a prestigious national award recognizing investigative reporting that results in positive community reforms for his work in the death of Javier Ambler II and the Williamson County Sheriff s Office.
The Hillman Prize honors journalists, writers and public figures that pursue investigative journalism and public policy in service of the common good.
Plohetski won in the broadcast category for his work with KVUE, which he reported in partnership with the Austin American-Statesman. Awards are also granted in categories that include books, newspapers, magazines, digital and opinion and analysis. ....

After French Army officer Alfred Dreyfuss was found guilty of espionage, novelist Ãmile Zola wrote an open letter to French president Felix Faure that was published on the front page of L Aurore on January 13, 1898. In it he claimed that the hierarchy of the Army was anti-Semitic and that the officers had railroaded Dreyfuss because he was Jewish.
The governmentâs response was to prosecute Zola for libel. To escape punishment, he fled to England in February, only to return in June.
By then, public opinion had turned in favor of the disgraced Dreyfuss. In a second trial, he was again found guilty. But was finally exonerated. ....

We don’t think it’s even been a week since we did a post on journalists congratulating themselves. They seem to be needier than Hollywood actors when it comes to adoration, and if they need to come up with an award like the Dan Rather Medal for News and Guts to fill the void where their Pulitzer should be, then so be it. Speaking of Pulitzers, the great thing is you don’t have to give it back when the “story” you were chasing falls apart or your knowledge of history is a bit off. ....

We’re kind of amused by the idea of a reporter wanting to “Make Journalism Great Again” on Inauguration Day, seeing as the media has done nothing but pat itself on the back for the past four years (the Dan Rather Medal for News and Guts?) even though the biggest story of President Trump’s term turned out to be fake news.
