‘Lasting Covid effects uncommon in children, with most recovered in a week’

Long-lasting effects of Covid are not common in children, according to research from King’s College London (Nick Ansell/PA Wire)
Children who become ill with coronavirus are unlikely to have long-term effects, with less than 2% having symptoms lasting more than eight weeks, research has shown.
Illness from Covid-19 lasted no more than a week on average in people aged between five and 17, according to findings from a study led by researchers at King’s College London.
The results, published in the Lancet Child and Adolescent Health journal, involved scientists looking at daily health reports logged in the Zoe Covid Study app and focused on September 2020 through to February 2021. ....

Schools minister hopes face masks in class will no longer be needed from mid-May

The schools minister hopes that pupils will no longer have to wear face masks in class in secondary schools and colleges in England from mid-May.
But Nick Gibb said the decision on whether to lift the precautionary measure when further easing of social contact limits indoors are confirmed, which will be no earlier than May 17, will depend on “the data”.
His comments came after MPs raised concerns about face coverings disrupting pupils’ learning and wellbeing.
During the education select committee, Caroline Johnson, Conservative MP for Sleaford and North Hykeham, said she had heard many stories of children “really suffering” as a result of wearing masks. ....

Millions of children are returning to the classroom for the first time since December as coronavirus restrictions in England begin to ease.
Under the first phase of the Government’s road map out of lockdown, visits to care homes are also resuming from Monday – under strictly controlled conditions.
And the rules around meeting another household have been loosened to allow people to leave home to meet one other person outdoors for a coffee or picnic.
