A new Dartmouth Engineering study shows that integrating renewable energy into the American Electric Power System (AEPS) would enhance the grid s resilience, meaning a highly resilient and decarbonized energy system is possible. The researchers analysis is based upon the incremental incorporation of architectural changes that would be required to integrate renewable energy into AEPS.
IEEE Access.
We concluded that there are no structural trade-offs between grid sustainability and resilience enhancements, meaning these strategic goals can be pursued simultaneously, said Principal Investigator Amro Farid, a professor at Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth and research affiliate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). ....

Differences in national food security best explained by household income, not agriculture

 E-Mail
One of the most comprehensive statistical analyses of drivers of food insecurity across 65 countries has concluded that household income consistently explains more discrepancy in food security than any other factor, including agricultural land resources and production. The Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth study, Cross-national analysis of food security drivers: comparing results based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale and Global Food Security Index, was recently published by the peer-reviewed journal
Food Security.
Given the persistent issue of food insecurity one of the United Nation s sustainable development goals is to achieve zero hunger the study s results are vital in determining how best to tackle the complex problem. ....

New algorithm reduces patient wait times, minimizes costs associated with exam delays

New algorithm reduces patient wait times, minimizes costs associated with exam delays
The first known study to explore optimal outpatient exam scheduling given the flexibility of inpatient exams has resulted in shorter wait times for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) patients at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Mass.
A team of researchers from Dartmouth Engineering and Philips worked to identify sources of delays for MRI procedures at Lahey Hospital in order to optimize scheduling and reduce overall costs for the hospital by 23 percent.
The Dartmouth-led study, Stochastic programming for outpatient scheduling with flexible inpatient exam accommodation, was sponsored by Philips and recently published by ....

Dartmouth Researchers Pilot FLASH Radiotherapy Beam Development for Treatment of Cancer

A joint team of researchers from Radiation Oncology at Dartmouth’s and Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center (NCCC), Dartmouth Engineering, and Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Department of Surgery have developed a method to convert a standard linear accelerator (LINAC), used for delivery of radiation therapy cancer treatment, to a FLASH ultra-high-dose rate radiation therapy beam. The work, entitled “Electron FLASH Delivery at Treatment Room Isocenter for Efficient Reversible Conversion of a Clinical LINAC,” is newly published online in
International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology & Physics.
The exceptionally high dose rate is 3,000 times higher than normal therapy treatment (300 Gray per second vs. 0.1 Gray per second, Gray being a standard unit measuring absorbed radiation). Instead of treatment over 20 seconds, an entire treatment is completed in 6 milliseconds, giving the therapy its nickname, “FLASH.” “These high dose rates have been sho ....
