Carolina Classic Fair is scheduled for Oct. 1-10 at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds. It's the first full fair to have the new name


The Carolina Classic Fair will return Oct. 1-10, after being canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. 
Planning for the fair has already started and city officials hope that restrictions on gatherings will be relaxed enough for the fair to go on, Assistant City Manager Ben Rowe said Friday.
It takes several months for us to plan the Carolina Classic Fair, Rowe said.
City officials are lining up entertainers and food vendors and talking with Strates Shows Inc., which operates the midway, he said.
In July 2020, city canceled the fair because of the pandemic and limits on gatherings in North Carolina. ....

Carvings by members of the Triad Woodcarvers showcased at Forsyth County Central Library


“Our mission as a woodcarving club is to promote the art of woodcarving and to teach and develop carvers,” Ray Branch, the chairman of public relations and membership for the Triad Woodcarvers, said.
The carvings will be on display at the Forsyth County Central Library at 660 W. Fifth St. in Winston-Salem through May 31.

The Triad Woodcarvers is one of the fastest growing arts organization in Winston Salem and one of the fastest growing woodcarving clubs in North Carolina and South Carolina.
Branch said the club’s membership has grown from 18 to about 100 in the past three years, adding that its membership of women grew from one to 28 during that same period. ....

Journal earns 40 awards in 2020 NCPA competition


The Winston-Salem Journal received 40 awards during the annual convention of the N.C. Press Association held virtually Friday.
The number of awards for the period of Oct. 1, 2019, to Sept. 30, 2020, continues a string of strong performances for the newspaper.
For the 2020 News, Editorial and Photojournalism Contest, the Journal received 11 first-place awards including public service, 13 second-place awards and 16 third-place awards.
Ten current and five former staff members received awards, and the Journal earned 13 full-staff recognitions.
The Journal competes with the state’s major metro newspapers for General Excellence award and individual awards. The Journal received first-place honors in General Excellence in 2016, 2018 and 2019. This year, the Journal won third place in General Excellence and second place in General Excellence for Websites. ....
