Five antitrust laws proposed in the United States aim to aggressively rein in the market power of “big tech” companies and change the way they do business.
The set of bills, introduced on June 11, targets the enormous economic power wielded by the likes of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google (owned by parent company Alphabet).
The expansive proposals range from breaking up different businesses run by big tech, to more effectively preventing mergers known as “killer acquisitions”, in which big tech companies buy up rivals to stamp out threats to their market power. ....

Google illegally misled Australian phone users when it kept collecting location data after users thought they had turned off location tracking, the Federal Court has found.
In a world-first judgment that could cost the tech giant tens of millions of dollars in fines, Justice Thomas Thawley found that Android phone users would have been deceived by the settings on Android phones, which allowed Google to keep tracking, cataloguing and profiting from a user’s location, even after the user had explicitly set location data to “off”.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission sued Google in October 2019, alleging it breached three sections of Australian Consumer Law (ACL) when it allowed users to turn off location data, but secretly kept tracking a user’s movements unless another setting on the phone, “Web & App Activity”, was also turned off. ....
