Here's how areas in Austin voted on Prop B, homeless camping ban

The results of the Proposition B vote in Austin s May 1 election show a sharp east-west voter divide over whether a public camping ban aimed at the city s homeless population should be reinstated.
Precinct-by-precinct results indicated that supporters of Prop B carried all precincts west of MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1). Meanwhile, large swaths of East Austin voted against Prop B.
The east-west divide in how voters cast ballots is nothing new to Austin West Austinites tend to be less progressive than their East Austin counterparts. But passing Prop B required a bipartisan coalition.
The final results showed that in a city that favored Joe Biden over Donald Trump by a near 3-to-1 ratio in last November s presidential election, a large number of Democrats turned away from the party line.  ....

Housing in Brief: D.C. Judge Vacates CDC Eviction Order

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., ruled that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention exceeded its authority when it issued a moratorium on evictions during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Washington Post. The ruling would vacate the federal eviction protection, which is currently set to expire on June 30, the Post says. But the Department of Justice is planning to appeal the decision and ask for a stay, which would allow the order to remain in effect while the legal case continues.
The ruling, from U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich, a Trump appointee, is in response to a lawsuit filed by the Alabama Association of Realtors, one of a number of lawsuits filed by property owners challenging the CDC’s authority to impose an eviction moratorium. In March, a judge in Cleveland also ruled that the CDC overstepped its authority, as Next City reported. ....

Prop B: 63% of Austin early voters in favor of bringing back camping ban

After all votes were counted in Austin, Proposition B soared to victory in a race many thought would be tighter than it ended up.
In a hotly contested debate involving the city s homelessness crisis, 57% of voters said they were in favor of reinstating criminal penalties for camping in public spaces and 42% said they were not.
More than 150,000 voters cast a ballot: 85,830 in favor, 64,409 against.
Proposition B took center stage among eight ballot propositions, giving residents the voice they did not have two years ago when Mayor Steve Adler and the Austin City Council made it lawful to camp in most public spaces by canceling a 23-year-old ordinance that had prohibited it. ....
