Information on vaccines getting better ‘almost by the day’25/05/2021|9min
The information being gathered in relation to coronavirus vaccines is getting better “almost by the day,” according to Deakin University Chair of Epidemiology Professor Catherine Bennett.
It comes amid discussions about implementing incentives for vaccination – an initiative which Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly has called for.
“We’ve had three significant bits of information coming out of the analysis of UK real world data over this last fortnight,” Professor Bennett told Sky News.
“That includes very high effectiveness not just against symptomatic disease and particularly serious disease which we know about. ....

'Repeated success' hopefully reassures governments they don't always need to lockdown

Repeated success hopefully reassures governments they don t always need to lockdown24/05/2021|4min
Deakin University Chair of Epidemiology Professor Catherine Bennett says hopefully repeated success has reassured governments that they don t always need to turn to lockdowns amid an outbreak of COVID-19.
Professor Bennett spoke to Sky News about contact tracing, lockdowns and the latest coronavirus cluster to emerge in Victoria.
It comes after Victoria recently recorded four new locally acquired coronavirus cases in the state.
Professor Bennett said it must be remembered lockdowns are put in place as a safety net .
And that s the idea that if contact tracing doesn t cover it all, or if there s exposure sites they re not aware of, that they re actually able to pick that up or protect against it with the lockdown . ....

Moderna storage requirements may be a 'practical benefit' over Pfizer

Deakin University Chair of Epidemiology Professor Catherine Bennett says the Moderna vaccine is "very similar" to the Pfzier vaccine, but its storage requirements may be seen as a more “practical”.

Australia has secured 25 million doses of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine - which is awaiting approval from the TGA - after a deal was struck between the federal government and the pharmaceutical giant.

Professor Bennett told Sky News the Moderna vaccine has a similar efficacy rate as the Pfzier vaccine at over 90 per cent but it can be stored in a normal freezer compared to the minus 70 degrees Celsius required for Pfizer.

“It’s also something that can be kept in a fridge after you’ve defrosted it to start to administer doses,” she said.

“So there might be some practical benefits of Moderna over Pfizer as well that might help us in the latter part of the year when we’re trying to vaccinate that younger adult population”.
