More than two dozen petitioners including the Columbus Monument Corporation are suing the city of Syracuse to halt its planned removal.

Mayor Ben Walsh an Independent announced on Oct. 9 that the sculpture of the controversial explorer would be canned after opposition from Native Americans and progressives led a special committee to call for its removal.
“I understand this decision has caused pain for some in our Italian American community, and I am sorry for that, but I truly believe this will ultimately bring our community closer together,” Walsh said in making the announcement. ....

Jeff LaHurd: Sarasota landmarks saved from the wrecking ball

In Sarasota, “Money talks, history walks.” I remember when there was a push to save Sarasota High School, long before Dr. Larry Thompson raised the funds to engineer a fantastic makeover of the Collegiate Gothic school which served generations of locals, myself included.

FLORIDA BUILDINGS I LOVE: Old Lee County Courthouse, Fort Myers

The FBIL list includes repeat appearances by architects, living and deceased, who are well-known to Florida design buffs, especially those who live in Sarasota.
Paul Rudolph, Victor Lundy, Dwight James Baum, M. Leo Elliott and Addison Mizner are among the state’s architectural legends who have at least two buildings on the list.
But, as the years roll by, the names and contributions of notable architects of yesteryear tend to fade into the pages of history.
Francis J. Kennard is one such designer.
Already on the FBIL list for his Gasparilla Inn in Boca Grande and Floridan Hotel in Tampa, Kennard is saluted again this week for his Lee County Courthouse. ....
