On 14 April, after spending three years underground, Bimal Gurung addressed a mammoth gathering in Darjeeling. Gurung is one of the most recognisable faces of the Gorkhaland movement, which has long agitated for a separate state to represent the Nepali-speaking community along the northernmost reaches of West Bengal. He is the founder of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, the primary political vehicle of the Gorkhaland movement, and was previously the chairperson of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration,
an autonomous administration representing Gorkha majority regions. A World War 2-era airport at Rupsi in Assam’s Kokrajhar district reopened after 35 years on Saturday, bringing cheers to the residents of Cooch Behar and Alipurduar districts in Bengal as they could avail themselves of flights after a two-hour travel by road.
Alipurduar and Cooch Behar are the two districts located farthest from Calcutta. For the people of these two districts, they have to travel by road for around four hours to reach Bagdogra, their nearest airport located around 200km away. ....

The Duars (Gateway)
The name Darrang seems to have originated from the Sanskrit word Dwaram which means a Duar or a pass. In the past, there were some fixed Duars on the northern side of the district from which the various hill tribes descended to the plains from the Himalayan ranges. Some of the areas still have a suffix Duar to their names and one of the six passes on the northern side of the present district is called Khaling Duar . Another possible origin of the name is the word Devaranga which means the playground of Devas. There are several places in the district like Athrikhat, Khalingduar, Dhwalpur, Markandasram etc., show their ancient association with the mythic sages like Markedeya, Kaulinya, Atri, Yagyabalka etc. ....

The plantation workers are on tenterhooks. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - the challenger - and the Left Front have all promised them the moon in the run-up to the assembly elections.
Everyone has said all closed plantations will reopen and over 60,000 jobless workers will have jobs. It could be a Central government job, or a state government job. It sounds like the tale of the horse and the carrot. ....
