Scientists: Starving Melanoma Cells Could Provide Future Treatment

April 1, 2014
Melanoma is the rarest form of skin cancer, but it’s also the deadliest. Researchers in Australia believe they may have stumbled on a new mechanism for future treatments of the deadly skin cancer, but their ideas will take years to develop. For now, other research indicates viable treatments and preventions could come from natural sources instead.
According to recent research, the new mechanism for killing melanoma cells involves starving them of their fuel the amino acid glutamine.
While normal cells use glucose for energy to grow and proliferate, cancer cells use glutamine sucked through pumps across their surface. Melanoma cells in particular have more glutamine pumps on their surface, which the researchers found could be blocked, ....

Researchers identify proteins that contribute to the pathogenicity of COVID-19 virus

Researchers identify proteins that contribute to the pathogenicity of COVID-19 virus
Researchers at Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) have narrowed down the proteins enabling SARS-CoV-2 to cause disease. Using advanced genetic engineering techniques developed at Texas Biomed, they systematically deleted the genetic code for five of the virus s accessory proteins, one at a time, to see how each one affected the virus s ability to spread and cause illness. The research was published online this month in the
Journal of Virology.
They found two proteins that seem to contribute most to the virus s pathogenicity, or ability to cause COVID-19 disease. When individually lacking those proteins, the virus did not replicate as much as the natural virus in cells, suggesting they play a critical role in its spread. In contrast, spread was not significantly reduced when the other proteins were deleted. ....

SNPRC at Texas Biomed awarded $37 million NIH grant to continue operations into 2026

SNPRC at Texas Biomed awarded $37 million NIH grant to continue operations into 2026
The Southwest National Primate Research Center (SNPRC) at Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) has been awarded more than $37 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue operations into 2026. The P51 grant, given by the NIH Office of Research Infrastructure Programs, provides essential funding to house and care for nearly 2,500 non-human primates that are part of life-science research programs at Texas Biomed and partners around the globe.
Non-human primates play an essential role in pre-clinical research, including most recently helping to show that the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine would be safe and effective for humans, accelerating the clinical trials. The support from NIH for our Center will ensure that we can continue this critical work in finding new treatments and vaccines against a variety of infectious diseases, while maintaining the absolute ....
