Biologists ask locals to take down bird feeders due to salmonella outbreak

Central Texas is a major flyway for migratory birds. Many of them return north from their winter homes in Central and South America this time of year, with many locals enjoying the event.
“I have been feeding my backyard birds for quite a few years,” said Killeen resident Alison Whyte Frank. “I put specific seed out to draw certain birds, mostly songbirds. They provide lots of enjoyment to us through their song and watching their behavior.”
While migratory birds make this trip annually, this year’s stopover in Texas is more hazardous than usual due to an aggressive salmonella outbreak. ....

Zebra mussels are spreading like wildfire yet again, and this year, they re closer to San Antonio than ever.
Lake Placid, which is 36 miles outside of San Antonio, was designated by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as “fully infested on Tuesday, while Lake Medina was named positive for the pests.
The discovery of the invasive species at Medina marks the first time the critters have been found in the San Antonio river basin, according to TPWD.
The mollusk spreads when aquatic equipment, like boats, are not cleaned and dried properly before being moved and used on uninfected waters.
The department said in a press release that they investigated the Medina infestation after a lake visitor sent a photo of the striped creatures near a boat ramp by Haby s Cove. ....

PINS: Masks still required when social distancing is impossible

If you re heading to Padre Island National Seashore soon, there s something you should know.
The national park is requiring visitors to wear face masks while inside its facilities or in areas outside where social distancing is impossible, according to a Sunday Facebook post from PINS.
PINS is managed by the Department of the Interior, which is a federal agency, not a state organization like the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. All national parks are mandating face masks. Dustin Baker, public information officer for PINS, told MySA.com the executive order from the White House does not give details on fines or violations but asks sites to encourage and remind visitors to wear face masks. ....

Pine siskins face a deadly dilemma in the San Antonio area this spring.
The small songbirds with muted brown and yellow plumage are taking the brunt of a spike in salmonellosis, an infection caused by the salmonella bacteria. Local residents have found dead pine siskins and other finches near their bird feeders.
Wildlife experts recommend cleaning feeders regularly or pulling them down entirely to prevent the spread of the disease. But those same feeders are seeing more hungry migratory birds than ever after a winter freeze that decimated Texas plants. ....
