DETROIT (Tribune News Service) If David Shock has his way, he ll be roasting coffee beans along the Detroit riverfront at Historic Fort Wayne before Christmas.
James Oliver Coffee Co. has set its sights on renovating the former Post Engineer s Storehouse to operate a roasting plantand satellite cafe on the fort s sprawling campus.
Shock, co-founder of the Detroit-based company with his wife, Miranda Clark, who is CEO, are the facesbehind one of the first proposals being considered by the city to reinvent the long-neglected site.
I just love the vibe and the energy of it. There s so much history, Shock said. Every neighborhood is ignited by a cafe or coffee shop in the neighborhood. ....

(WXYZ) — Cinco de Mayo is happening once again as the pandemic continues and businesses are restricted with capacity limits and curfews, but Southwest Detroit’s authentic Mexican restaurants, mercados, bakeries and specialty retailers are offering special promotions for to-go meals.

White neighborhoods received PPP loans at twice the rate of Latino communities in metro Detroit


On a recent evening in Detroit’s Mexicantown neighborhood, notes from a guitar played by a busker on the sidewalk reverberated off the walls of the mural-covered buildings. The smells of Mexican street food filled the air, and Valeria Lopez was bent over a clipboard at a booth inside Taqueria Lupita’s Authentic Mexican Restaurant. Regulars just call it Lupita’s.
Valeria Lopez took over her parents business during the pandemic. She said she did not qualify for a PPP loan.

Lopez runs the place now. She took over the business from her parents, who decided to retire when the pandemic hit. Her plan was to get a forgivable loan for small businesses from the federal government’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) to help pay her staff. ....
