NATIONAL NEWS - The City of Cape Town has commended businesses who have stepped up to support over 1 000 students affected by the Cape Town fire.
Western Cape Finance and Economic Opportunities MEC, David Maynier, said the immense response to the Cape Town fire from across government, civil society and the private sector has been incredible.
“In particular, I would like to thank businesses in Cape Town, especially those in the tourism and hospitality industry, who have stepped up to quickly assist those affected by the fire, especially University of Cape Town (UCT) students, who had to be evacuated from their residences,” Maynier said on Tuesday.

Cape Town – As has been the hallmark of South Africans when faced with a calamity, everyone stands together and offers assistance in every way they can. This has again been seen with the outpouring of relief for those affected and impacted by the devastating fire along the slopes of Table Mountain.
Gift of the Givers is preparing three meals per day for the next seven days for evacuated UCT students, and has been preparing personal hygiene packs for the students spread across 29 hostels in response to their need for soap, toothpaste and hygiene items.

A message posted on the UCT Libraries Facebook page from Ujala Satgoor, Executive Director of Libraries, said: At this stage, we can confirm the Reading Room is completely gutted and thankfully the fire detection system in place triggered the fire shutters thereby preventing the spread of the fire to other parts of the Library. Some of our valuable collections have been lost, however a full assessment can only be done once the building has been declared safe and we can enter the building.
