A cornerstone of Washington Democrats climate agenda is now officially dead in the state legislature, leaving the party s green energy dreams in doubt.
Once considered the most ambitious climate legislation this session, House Bill 1099 would have written carbon (CO2) emission reduction into the state s land use codes included in its Growth Management Act by 2034. Counties and cities would have been obligated to promote greenways, study CO2 emissions impact on underrepresented communities, and reduce competition between residential housing and parking developments. The bill applied to the state s denser urban counties, namely those around the Puget Sound. ....

Einsteinium, Element Named after Albert Einstein, No More a Mystery as Scientists Discover its Properties
FOLLOW US ON:
Placed quite down in the periodic table with the atomic number 99, Einsteinium is the seventh transuranic element. Named after world-renowned physicist Albert Einstein, the properties of one of the heaviest elements, einsteinium, have not been understood clearly so far.
But that has now changed as the researchers from California’s Berkeley National Laboratory have come up with solutions to overcome this problem. Led by chemist Rebecca Abergel, the team at Tennessee’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory used High Flux Isotope Reactor to first synthesize a 250 nanogram sample of the isotope einsteinium-254. They synthesized it by bombarding neutrons at the curium targets. Thistriggered radioactive decay chains. ....

DOE publishes reactor impact statement

The U.S. Department of Energy has released the draft environmental impact statement for a test reactor it would like to build at Idaho National Laboratory.
The statement on the Versatile Test Reactor was released Monday and is available online through the Office of Nuclear Energy’s website, energy.gov/ne/office-nuclear-energy. Public comment will conclude 45 days after the federal Environmental Protection Agency publishes notice in the Federal Register, which is expected to happen on Dec. 31. DOE will then hold two virtual public hearings, dates to be announced.
The Versatile Test Reactor would be the first new test reactor built in the U.S. in decades and would test how fuels, materials and sensors hold up when battered with radiation in the form of fast neutrons, which the reactor could generate at higher speeds and concentrations than existing test infrastructure. While both INL and Tennessee’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory are being considered for it and the ....
